Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan Free Trade Zone opens
Trade, economic and cultural ties between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have gained new momentum in recent years, reaching a significantly higher level. Regular high-level meetings between the heads of state continue to strengthen close neighbourly relations, foster strategic partnerships and promote mutually beneficial cooperation.
The opening of a new trade zone on the border between Uzbekistan’s Khorezm region and Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz region marks another important step in expanding bilateral trade and economic relations.
The free trade zone, covering 3.1 hectares, has been built next to the “Shavat–Dashoguz” border crossing. It features modern infrastructure, including enclosed pavilions, retail stalls, shops, warehouses for receiving and storing goods, a hotel, canteen, parking area, medical point, bank branch, and currency-exchange facilities. Phytosanitary and veterinary services have also been introduced under a “one-stop shop” system. The introduction of a visa-free regime in the area further enhances convenience for citizens of both countries.
Mutual trade between Khorezm and the neighbouring Dashoguz region has been growing steadily year by year. Khorezm exports basalt tiles, wallpaper, paint, and varnish products, as well as fresh and dried fruit to Turkmenistan, while Turkmenistan supplies oil and oil products, bitumen, ceramics, aluminium, and glassware to Uzbekistan.
“As our people say, ‘a nearby neighbour is better than a distant relative,’” said Jeyren Kilichmuradova, a member of the Turkmenistan Mejlis. “Indeed, Uzbeks and Turkmens share a common culture, similar values, and deep historical roots. For centuries, the two brotherly peoples have drawn water from the same river, traded with one another, and enriched each other’s culture. With a common language, spirit, and faith, they have long lived side by side as close families. The opening of this new trade zone will not only boost trade but also strengthen goodwill, mutual respect, and solidarity between our nations.”
Entrepreneurs have shown a strong interest in the new zone. It operates under a “Free Customs Zone” regime, which allows goods produced in both countries to be sold at retail without customs duties — a powerful incentive for expanding bilateral trade.
“Trade relations between our two countries, located along the ancient Silk Road, have been developing for centuries,” said Rahimboy Sherzhanov, a respected labour veteran from the Yangibozor district of Khorezm region. “Today, intergovernmental meetings and business-to-business dialogue continue to strengthen cooperation. Most importantly, a new chapter is opening in the neighbourly relations of our peoples. This newly opened border trade zone will deepen cooperation and help reinforce mutual understanding and unity. As a result, interregional trade will rise further, economic partnership will deepen, and a solid foundation will be laid for stability and development across the region.”
