World Bank allocates an $800 million concessional loan to Uzbekistan
The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors approved a financial package of $800 million in highly concessional loans to support Uzbekistan’s reform program. The World Bank's press service reports this.
The reform program includes measures to improve the country's business environment, boost efficiency in the agriculture, railways, and energy sectors, enhance public finance management, expand social protection services, and strengthen the country’s preparedness for environmental and climate change risks.
The financing from the World Bank comes in the form of highly concessional loans, providing the government with low-cost and long-term repayment options that are more favorable than those found in international financial markets.
'This will help Uzbekistan save significant financial resources that can be directed toward addressing urgent socio-economic issues,' the statement noted.
The financial resources will be allocated to areas such as the social protection system, combating gender-based violence, ensuring farmers' rights to own and use agricultural lands, improving the business environment, managing public finances, combating climate change, managing water resources, assessing environmental and climate impacts, increasing resilience to climate change, and developing the railways and energy sectors.
