Following a presidential decree signed on April 21, Uzbekistan will begin developing a nationwide project to regulate wedding celebrations.

A joint resolution of the parliamentary chambersʼ councils will be adopted by August this year to regulate the organization of weddings, family celebrations, memorial meals, and other ceremonies. The initiative also includes the development of new mechanisms to promote a culture of frugality among young people.

The project will be overseen by the chambers of the Oliy Majlis, the Ministry of Culture, the Committee on Family and Womenʼs Affairs, and the Committee on Religious Affairs.

Notably, this move builds on the existing framework established by a joint resolution adopted on September 14, 2019, by the Legislative Chamber and Senate of the Oliy Majlis. That resolution, which came into force on January 1, 2020, remains legally binding and continues to govern the organization of ceremonial events.

Under current regulations, weddings, family celebrations, and ceremonies may only be held once per occasion (excluding funerals) and must take place between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

Guest limits are set at 200 people for weddings, family events, memorials, and ceremonies. Feasts held in connection with these events may host up to 250 guests. For double weddings, the limit increases to 250 guests for the ceremony and 300 for the accompanying feast.

According to Article 1921 added to the Code of Administrative Responsibility, individuals who violate the established rules for holding weddings, family celebrations, memorial meals, and ceremonies may be fined 10 basic calculation units (currently 3,750,000 UZS). Officials of banquet halls and cafe-restaurants may be fined 30 basic calculation units (repeated violations are subject to a fine of 50 units).
