Uzbekistan appoints New Ambassador to the Vatican

Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Spain, Farrukh Tursunov, has presented his credentials to PopeLeo XIV, the Dunyo Information Agency reported.

During talks at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, the ambassador briefed the Pope on the large-scale political, economic, and social reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan, as well as efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions. He also conveyed the sincere greetings and best wishes of the President of Uzbekistan.

Pope Leo  XIV expressed his deep respect for the President and the people of Uzbekistan, noting that over the 33 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and the Vatican, a solid foundation for cooperation has been built to promote friendship and mutual understanding among people of different nationalities and faiths.

The Pope also highlighted the importance of Samarkand as a major centre of philosophical and religious thought that has influenced both the Eastern and Western worlds. It was emphasized that Uzbekistan has traditionally advocated for interfaith harmony and tolerance and actively supports international initiatives in this field.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Pope Leo XIV said he would pray for the prosperity of the Uzbek people and expressed hope for the further strengthening of friendship and constructive cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Vatican.

It is worth recalling that Farrukh Tursunov currently serves as Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Spain. On 9 April 2024, he presented his credentials to King Felipe VI of Spain. In addition, on 11 March 2025, he presented his credentials, in a concurrent capacity, to the Co-Prince of Andorra, French President Emmanuel Macron.
